Jurisdictional HIV Testing Initiatives

Project aim:               

Implement borough-wide initiatives to increase voluntary HIV testing among New York City residents, including The Bronx Knows, Brooklyn Knows, and New York Knows

Population and Setting:                       

Residents of New York City between the ages of 13 to 64

Partners:                    

New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 

Services provided:

  • Provided technical assistance to hospitals and health centers on implementing routine HIV screening and to community and faith-based organizations implementing HIV testing programs

  • Oversaw data reporting from all partners, maintained database and oversaw routine reporting to track progress towards initiative goals  

  • Developed HIV Testing Action Kits, toolkits for health care providers which included materials offering guidance on implementing routine HIV screening and educational materials for patients and the public

  • Developed and coordinated workshops for community partners, and planned large-scale HIV awareness and testing events

  • Contributed to development of social marketing campaigns including subway station, bus shelter, and billboard ads

  • Represented DOHMH at national conferences and public events, presented on initiative approach and achievements

  • Provided guidance to other jurisdictions across the country interested in replicating New York City’s efforts

  • Produced final report
